The Wilmington Police Department and charity organization Cops For Kids With Cancer provided $5,000 for a Wilmington family on Jan. 18.

Mark and Lilia Maselli of Wilmington’s son David, 3, was diagnosed with leukemia on May 11 of last year. Since then, David has undergone surgery and received cancer treatments.

“He’s such a great kid,” Lilia said on Jan. 18, as their family met with Wilmington police and Robert Faherty, chairman of the board of Cops For Kids With Cancer.

Along with the official donation, David also got an up close look at the fire trucks at the Wilmington Public Safety Building, and got to meet one of the dogs from the police department’s K-9 unit.

Cops For Kids With Cancer is an organization made up of police officers, retired police officers, and friends of law enforcement, Faherty said. The donation, he said, goes toward additional costs not normally covered by insurance.

“We’re here to raise money for families like you,” Faherty said. “Everyone goes for the cure, but not everyone thinks of the families.”

Cops for Kids With Cancer started in 2008 by raising funds for 10 families. The organization has grown since then, providing support to 75 families in 2012.

“We don’t have a big star or famous name to raise money, so we rely on local police departments to spread the word,” Faherty said. He added that the organization also holds fundraising events throughout the year, such as a road race and golf tournament in the summer.

In addition to the $5,000 donation, Faherty said Cops For Kids With Cancer is organizing a trip for child cancer patients at Tufts and Massachuetts General hospitals to take a boat ride on the Boston Police Harbor Unit’s 27-foot Intercept boat this summer.

According to the Cops For Kids With Cancer website, donations have gone to saving a family from eviction, helping to pay bills, and paying repairs for cars used to travel back and forth to the hospital. In four years, the group has raised more than $1 million for families in and around Massachusetts.
