Support Nora Barnicle’s Fundraiser!
I’m excited to be running the 2020 Boston Marathon for Cops for Kids with Cancer and in memory of my father, Paul Barnicle.
Cops for Kids with Cancer is a nonprofit focused on raising funds to aid families fighting cancer. Beyond the emotional burden of a child’s diagnosis, families are faced with medical expenses from treatments, hospital stays and even home alterations. Since 2002, the organization has raised more than $4 million so that families around New England can help their children beat cancer and lead healthy lives.
From the stories I’ve heard, my dad was a damn good police officer, but he was a father before anything else. A 28-year veteran of the Boston Police and homicide detective, I couldn’t tell you how he found time to watch me run, but there he was at every race – in his unmarked cruiser, nonetheless. It was his tenacity that pushed me through the toughest of courses, and his heart that consoled me when a race didn’t go my way. I always wanted to run well for Dad.
My father lost a year-long battle with lung cancer in 2018. Having grown up running in Newton, I always knew I wanted to run the Boston Marathon, my dad cheering somewhere along the way. While he won’t be there physically, I know my dad will be proud of me and the cause for which I choose to run. Now if I can only get him to bring some cool and dry race day conditions.
Thank you for your support and hope to see you on Marathon Monday!
